Saber
Client: Menu
Year: 2013
In 2012, Menu, a luxury home brand, wanted to create a champagne saber that did not resemble a weapon to help avoid security issues while traveling. They reached out to us to help bring their vision to life.
While researching sabrage, we noticed that a sharp edge isn’t needed. A blunt edge with enough force does the job. This enabled a completely rounded, tapering form with a 2mm flat edge on one side.
On one side, the handle is more voluminous and gives control to the user with a elliptical profile. On the other side, the form is flattened and completely round which avoids the common sword aesthetic most sabers have.
Made out of stainless steel and formed by master steel artisans, the Menu champagne saber debuted and eventually was sold under their own brand, retail partners and at the MoMA Design Store. Designed in collaboration with Karim Rashid Studio.
