System

Client: Method
Year: 2022

In 2020, Method started working on a completely new way, more sustainable way for consumers to refill and reuse their products. This was a sustainability-first initiative, and it required consumers to change the way they think about refills. The new system needed to be easy for consumers to understand, look and feel premium, durable enough to last years, and fit within retail shelf dimensions.

Through a lot of user research, we explored a spectrum of ways for consumers to use concentrates. Liquids, cartridges, dissolving tablets and more were experimented with to uncover what consumers preferred though testing and validation.

Foaming hand wash and all-purpose cleaner were the most viable types of cleaners from a formulation and user-experience standpoint. We identified that a concentrated liquid poured into water was highly preferred by consumers, and we started investigating premium but recyclable materials to be used in the system.

We explored a lot of design concepts, but we landed on a pair of designs that complimented each other. Tiny glass bottles would be used to contain the concentrated refills, and aluminum would be used for the main products for their durability.

A gradient color application and minimal branding on the bottles were used to elevate and communicate this was clearly different from other Method products.

Once the custom bottles and custom closures were refined, we created low and high fidelity prototypes for retailer meetings and for our own review. Graphics, secondary packaging, finishes and fragrance were also finalized.
