Dish Packs
Client: Method
Year: 2022
In 2021, Method wanted to create new rigid packaging for their dishwasher packs. This was a sustainability-first initiative, and their existing flexible-pouch packaging was not curbside recyclable. The new design needed to be recyclable, easy for consumers to use, fit within retail shelf dimensions, and nice enough to keep out on the counter.
Though plastic gets a lot of criticism, HDPE and PP are two of the most widely accepted recyclable materials, and they have some of the largest post-consumer recycled content streams in the world.
During our research phase, we started by using a number of competitive products to identify design and user experience opportunities. We also took note of common kitchen layouts and where people place these types of products. We wanted a design that could be stored efficiently and be kept out on the counter.
We explored a lot of concepts, but we landed on a tub that could scale for different pod capacities and a cap system that could be shared across sizes for consistency and lower capital investment costs. This shared cap is also the thinnest closure Method ever produced, and includes a temper-evidence tab to prevent theft and protect freshness.
Once the custom bottles and cap were refined, we created low and high fidelity prototypes for retailer meetings and for our own review. Graphics, finishes and fragrance-free formulations were also finalized.
