Boosters
Client: Method
Year: 2019
In 2021, Method wanted to introduce a new laundry product that would boost the cleaning of specific fabrics. The formulation was confirmed as a powder that would be loaded into washing machines before clothes were added. It needed to be easy for consumers to use, fit within retail shelf dimensions.
There are many laundry boosting products on the market, but most of them are in pod formats or need to be scooped out of a package. Pod formats are good, but it doesn’t allow for consumers to adjust the amount used. Packages with loose powder and scoops often lead to a messy experience and scoops don’t get recycled properly due to their small size.
During our research phase, we started by using a number of competitive products to identify design and user experience opportunities. We also took note of common laundry room layouts and where people place these types of products.
We prototyped and tested several bottle shapes, and we discovered a concept that allowed consumers to pour powder. This allowed consumers to adjust the amount used, produced less mess than scoops, and eliminated the problematic scoop. This led to a slimmer and taller package that took up less shelf space in the laundry room, and a cap that doubled as a measuring cup.
Once the custom bottle and leak-proof pump were refined, we created low and high fidelity prototypes for retailer meetings and for our own review. Graphics, finishes and fragrance-free formulations were also finalized.
