Retail
Client: Quip
Year: 2023
In 2022, Quip wanted to update their toothbrush retail packaging to increase manufacturing efficiency and decrease cost by at least 30%. The existing packaging faced challenges in manufacturing, used 3 molded fiber pieces and a paper wrap.
We started by auditing the cost of each individual piece and all manual labor costs throughout the assembly process. We identified the parts that were impacting cost the most, and improved upon them through 10 different concepts.
While refining a few of the designs, we were asked to use the existing packaging’s existing dimensions to avoid retail shelf reset fees. We also expanded beyond the toothbrush to other products like Quip’s water flosser.
Quip determined to use one of the concepts that could scale across all products for brand consistency and visibility in aisle, minimized manufacturing scrap, avoided shelf reset fees, and lowered cost by 37%. It consists of single molded fiber insert and a single die-cut card stock, all wrapped up in a friendly and informative package with a pleasant unboxing experience.
One smaller detail for the toothbrush packaging is the design of the molded fiber insert can accommodate the both brush types (battery and rechargeable) leading to an even greater cost savings.
The new packaging is being used at Target, Walmart and CVS.
